osCommerce Add Ons
Once known as osCommerce Contributions,osCommerce Add Ons are code that has been contributed by the osCommerce community which either changes or adds to the functionality of the core osCommerce product.
Some people wonder why osCommerce does not add some of this functionality to the core code. The answer is simple. The aim of osCommerce is to provide a stable and secure eCommerce solution that has the basic tools needed to sell online. To support that outcome, the osCommerce team has resisted bloating the code with functionality that might not be needed.
Why? The more functionality a solution has, the more code has to be written to provide it. More code means greater maintenance effort, more oportunities for both bugs and security risks. More code also means larger which are llower to laod and less SEO friendly. So unlike other open source solutions, including the various osCommerce forks and alternatives like Magento, Prestashop and so on, that are hugely bloated and issue frequent updates to fix defects and security flaws, osCommerce is not only lean, it is stable and secure - making it the solution of choice for to build your own unique eCommerce solution.
To support this strategy, the osCommerce community has contributed lots of extra functionality that gives osCommerce users even greater options than built in features would. There is always more than one way to do something. So there is often more than one Add On to choose from. And the beauty is once chosen you can further modify it to make sure it fits your unique business model without fear you are going to have to rebuild it all next month when a new release comes out!
ozEworks has contributed to many Add Ons. But you won’t see that on the forums. We don’t do it as a company. Our policy is that it is up to the individual programmer as to whether they wish to contribute. We support their individual effort in the spirit of open source.
